Horst hosts The Alternative Process Social (APS) at his studio. This is a community arts organization for all things related to alternative photographic processes. This encompasses all analog photographic techniques that are not digital, such as tintypes, cyanotypes, salt printing, gum-bichromate, platinum and palladium, traditional black-and-white silver printing, and all film, including colour. We live in a digital age, so the intersection with the digital world is unavoidable—that’s okay. The critical element is that the processes we explore have a manual component that underpins the photographer’s expression.

The APS community is open to all abilities. The attendees range from the curious to dedicated enthusiasts, from commercial photographers to masters with international reputations. You don’t even need to be a photographer.

APS began in the Spring of 2022. We meet every other month on the third Monday, from 7-9 pm at Daylight Studio in Leaside. We have hosted demonstrations on daguerreotypes, tintypes, and cyanotypes, as well as talks on the creative process, photography chemistry, and books, along with field trips to galleries and other events. The cost to attend is $25.
